Improve your home’s energy efficiency with a Canada Greener Homes Loan

The Canada Greener Homes Loan helps Canadians make their homes more energy efficient and comfortable. It offers interest-free financing in addition to the Canada Greener Homes Grant to help you complete some of the more major retrofits recommended by your energy advisor.

Loan details

Maximum: $40,000
Minimum: $5,000
Repayment term: 10 years, interest-free
Loan type: Unsecured personal loan on approved credit

A maximum of one loan is available per eligible property and homeowner.

The loan can only help you finance eligible products and installations that are part of a retrofit that is both recommended by an energy advisor and eligible for the grant.

To begin work in your home, a portion of the loan can be delivered to you up front. Contractors often require a down payment for these types of projects. The balance of the loan will be delivered upon successful completion of the retrofits, and verification through a post-retrofit evaluation.

Eligibility

All loan applicants
There are a few eligibility requirements to meet before applying for the loan:

• You must apply and be eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant or provincial program for Nova Scotia and Quebec
• You must be a Canadian homeowner and your home must be your primary residence
• You have completed pre-retrofit evaluation of your home dated April 01, 2020 or later
• You have a good credit history and aren’t under a consumer proposal, an orderly payment of debt program or bankruptcy or equivalent insolvency proceeding
• You will be asked to share financial information to demonstrate that you have the financial capacity to repay the loan.

The Canada Greener Homes Loan is now open to homeowners who wish to apply or have an active application (at the pre-retrofit stage), with the Canada Greener Homes Grant.

Starting August 31, 2022, homeowners who have already requested a post-retrofit evaluation or received a grant payment will be eligible to apply to the Greener Homes Loan for any remaining eligible retrofits they wish to pursue, that have not yet started.

Homeowners who have completed all their retrofits are not eligible to apply for the Canada Greener Homes Loan. However, homeowners may be eligible to apply for the loan for any remaining recommended retrofits that have not yet started.

How to apply for the loan for any remaining recommended retrofits that have not yet started?
This loan does not apply to the following work:

• work that you’ve already started or completed
• retrofits that haven’t been recommended by an energy advisor
• retrofits that are not eligible for a Canada Greener Homes Grant
• retrofits that aren’t included in your application
• Low-rise Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (MURBs)
• Individual homeowners living in a low-rise MURB must meet the additional eligibility criteria for MURBs outlined in the Canada Greener Homes Grant.

Check That Your Products Qualify
Your windows and doors must be ENERGY STAR certified with at least triple pane glass (entry doors with no glass must be ENERGY STAR certified). You can find qualified ENERGY STAR certified products on the Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) product lists linked below. When searching the lists, be sure to add a filter to only include products with at least three layers of glazing (unless your door doesn’t include glass).

Buy & Install Eligible Products
Rebates are available for eligible windows and doors that are new and purchased in Canada from a supplier, contractor, or retailer. Make sure you install your products before applying for a rebate.

Apply for Your Rebate

Fill out our online application form and attach your supporting invoice to apply for your rebate. Make sure you apply within 90 days of the final invoice date for your new windows and/or doors. You can also contact us for a paper application.

Do You Qualify?

Your windows and doors must be ENERGY STAR certified and have at least triple pane glass (entry doors with no glass must be ENERGY STAR certified).

Your application and invoice is received within 90 days of the final invoice date.

Your products are being installed in your or your tenant’s primary residence (commercial and seasonal properties aren’t eligible).

Windows and doors must replace existing windows and doors between an unheated space (e.g. outdoors) and a heated space.

Rebates are based on the number of qualifying openings in which windows or doors were replaced. Each opening is counted as one window and/or door. For example, a bay window, which may be made up of several window sections, is counted as one qualifying opening.

A total of 20 windows and/or doors can be rebated at one property over the lifetime of the Windows and Doors Rebate.

Home Energy Efficiency Loan (HEEL) from Manitoba Hydro is a convenient and affordable financing option if you want to make energy efficiency upgrades to your home. The monthly payment is added to your energy bill and no down payment is required.

Financing information

• Maximum financing per residence is $7,500 for windows and doors replacements.
• The term of the financing is up to five years.
• Minimum monthly payment is $15.
• Minimum amount that can be financed is $500.
• Monthly installments will be applied to your energy bill. Repayment of the loan is the responsibility of the homeowner and not the tenant.
• Additional payments may be made at any time with no penalty.
• A $20 administration fee will apply if the loan is paid off in full during the first 6 months.
• The loan becomes due and payable when the house is sold or transfers ownership. The loan is not transferable.
• The cost of one upgrade cannot be split between multiple HEEL Agreements or between financing programs.
