The Energy Rating (ER) of a PVC window is determined by its U-Value, SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient), Visible Transmittance, and Air Leakage.
The U-Value, also known as U-Factor, measures how well a window insulates against heat transfer. These measurements range from 0.25–1.25. The lower the U-Value is, the better the window’s insulating properties.
The SHGC measures how much solar radiation passes through the window and how much heat it gains from sunlight. This is measured between 0 and 1.
Visible Transmittance measures how much visible light passes through the window while Air Leakage measures how much air can escape from the window. This ranges from 0 to 1. The higher the number, the more light will be accepted.
Air leakage is the amount of air that is allowed to pass through a window. The lower the number, the more airtight the window. It ranges from 0.1–0.3. Homes in windy environments should have windows with a lower air leakage rate.
All these factors combined determine a PVC window’s energy rating (ER). Knowing these ratings can help you make an informed decision when selecting PVC windows and doors for your home.
